Note: The traditional term was nahdiyaw, now generally used for modern money. In order to be valuable, dentalia shells had to be long enough to reach from the base of the finger to the last joint, one and a half inches or longer. They were usually incised, strung on necklaces, and kept in special elkhorn purses.
