Dahungwho'-dung' dongq'a' k'iwinya'n-ya:n na:na:nde:tł' dung', misah-niłchwin mun'kyohłtsow 'iłch'ing' łiy ya:'iłdichwe'n
A long time ago, before people came down to earth, Buzzard and Blowfly made a bet with one another.

'a'de:ne', "Dunda:ng' ... dunda:ng' na:tseh ch'iłtsa:n-te: diywho' yo:w yahsłiq' siłtin-te:?"
Blowfly said, "Which of us will be the first to see something rotten lying somewhere?"

Misah-niłchwin 'a'de:ne', "Whe: na:tseh 'iwhtsa:n-te:!"
Buzzard said, "I will be the first to see it!"

"Daw!" xoł-ch'ide:ne', "Whe: ye: do:ng' na:tseh 'iwhtsun-te:!"
"No!" said Blowfly, "it's I who will be the first to see it!"

Haya:ł ung' de:q'ung-it q'ut ya'tehsde:tł'.
Shortly after that, they set off.

They were going along somewhere.

Mun'kyohłtsow yehch'iwingyay hay, ch'iłtsa:n k'iłuxun siłte:n, minchwiwh q'eh yehchiwingyay.
Blowfly went inside; he saw a deer lying dead and went in through its nose.

Haya:ł hayah me' ch'iwinda' do: sa'a:y mił 'un-gya' je:nah-xw na:'usxits', misah-niłchwin.
He hadn't been inside long when he saw Buzzard flying around in the sky.

Nin-ch'ing' ch'ite:ng'e'n, 'a:ch'o:ndehsne', "Hay-yo:w siłte:n e:y keh hayah na:nawhdiya'! Dungwhe'eh do: na'way e:."
Buzzard looked down and thought, "There is something lying dead - I think I'll go down there! Nobody is around."

Haya:ł ung' q'ut na:na'widxits'.
Then he flew down.

As soon as he had sat down, he began to eat that dead deer lying there.

Haya:ł sa'a: ya'wehs'a' k'iwinya'n mił, 'un-gya'...
After he had sat eating for a long time,

mun'kyohłtsow 'un-gya' minchwiwh q'eh ch'e:na:'undiyay.
he saw Blowfly - saw him emerge from the deer's nose!

Haya:ł 'a:xołch'ide:ne', "Dahung'di-dung' ninyay?"
He said to him, "When did YOU get here?"

Haya:ł 'a:xołch'ide:ne', "Whe: 'e:n' q'ut sa'a: digyun na:whwhay; q'ut wha:wehsle' ts'eh, q'ut na:tehsdiya:-te:."
And Blowfly replied, "Me, I've been around here a long time now, and now that I'm full I'm going home."

Hayi-q'i mił, 'aywin't'e:n'-ne', misah-niłchwin ne'en xowun na:niwehsdilay.
And so it came about that Old Buzzard lost his bet.
