The Circle is a weekly forum dedicated to discussion of the descriptive, experimental, and theoretical study of syntax and semantics, featuring presentations of ongoing research by members of the Berkeley Linguistics Department and other departments, as well as discussion of previously published works.

Crossover meeting with the UC Berkeley Natural Language Processing Group. This meeting is intended to increase awareness of the kinds of research currently being pursued by both groups. To this end, several people from each group will present summaries of a current research project, including goals and methodologies.
Important note: This week only we will meet in Sutardja Dai Hall, room 254. Lunch will be provided beginning at 12:30, and the presentations will begin at 1:00.

Amy Campbell will deliver a practice talk for NELS entitled "Meaning Targets in Syntax and Morphology". This talk proposes a novel analysis of agreement in Hupa (Athabaskan) and explores one mechanism by which morphological processes may be compelled and constrained.

Coordination-Subordination Continuum in Chungli Ao".

Jim McCloskey (University of California, Santa Cruz) will speak on "Subjects, Configurationality, and VSO Order". This paper considers how best to understand VSO order of one type, how the syntax proposed interacts with a supposedly universal obligatory subject requirement, and also how it interacts with constraints on ellipsis.

Clara Cohen will be presenting last year's Ling220B experiment in a talk entitled "An Empirical Approach to Nearly Free Control."
