This is the same speaker who produced the utterances shown in the book in Figure 8.7. In this version of the example words he has a pretty noticable "voice bar" during the initial [b], [d] and [g], and still place of articulation differences are subtle. The formant transitions with [ɛ] don't distinguish [b] and [d] very clearly, but the concentration of energy between 3000 and 4000 Hz in the [d] release burst seems to be a reliable cue.
