Practice identifying word stress patterns

Use this page to practice identifying word stress patterns in American English.

  1. Listen to the example as many times as you want.
  2. write your transcription of the stress pattern (e.g. 10, or 12, etc.) on a piece of paper.
  3. click "show text" to see the phrase in which the example word was said.
  4. click "show IPA" to see an IPA transcription of the word.
  5. click "show stress" to see the stress pattern of the word.
  6. click "go to next example" to try again with another word from the corpus.
