Purpose
The Berkeley Initiative For Computer Assisted Linguistics (BIFoCAL) is an
organization committed to promoting cooperation between computer-assisted
linguistics projects based both at U.C. Berkeley and other nearby universities.
It does this in two ways. First, it holds regular meetings consisted of
technically oriented linguists so that they can exchange information and
ideas with each other. Second, it holds workshops to train non-technical
linguists to use new tools and technologies. Members of BIFoCAL work
with OLAC and
EMELD and are committed to encouraging the use of open
standards to ensure maximum longevity and exchangeabity of linguistics
resources.
