I grew up in Wisconsin, then studied linguistics at the University of Minnesota and UC Berkeley. I was an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University from 2017-2020, and I became a Berkeley faculty member in January 2021. I live in the Bay Area with my family.
I typically spend my summers in West Africa, where I carry out linguistic fieldwork, primarily in Gnagbodgougnoa, Côte d'Ivoire documenting Guébie (Kru). I have also spent time in Nigeria and Benin where I participated in the African Linguistics School, first as a student and later as a professor.
Outside of linguistics, I enjoy hiking, running, bouldering, gluten free baking, and playing board games.
