A man was sweating himself at Weitchpec.

then    when.he.came.outdoors    there    he.laid.down   
And when he came out (of the sweathouse), he lay down there.

suddenly    sort.of    right.here    what    he.felt.it   
Suddenly he sort of felt something right here (on his body).

And he didn't stir.

He saw it was a snake, he watched it and watched it.

Finally it wasn't a long time after, (when) suddenly a little girl arrived there.

She looked at the man.

And she said, "My mother came to visit you here.
(Bright: "That is, the girl was the offspring from the contact between the man and the snake. Another informant offered the information that the king snake was the species involved.")

Do you see the sweathouse uphill?"

And he said, "No."

"Look, let me (fix) your eyes."

then    she.blew   
And she blew (on them).

And she said, "Do you see the sweathouse (now)?"

And he said, "Yes."

And she told him, "Let's go uphill!"

And she told him, "Live here!"; the people liked him.

And she said, "That (woman) over there is no good.

Don't look at her!"
(Bright: "The woman indicated is tapas'ápsuun, the rattlesnake.)

she.said    hazelnut    we.are.gathering.them   
She said, "We're gathering hazelnuts.

human    she.had    tease    over.there    not.good   
That one teases (euphemistic for "bites") people, she's no good.

[27] víri    naa        ná'aathva   
so    1sg.    PERF    I.am.afraid   
I'm afraid.

[28] máruk    hôoyva    ni'ípahoo        ná'aathva   
uphill    somewhere    I.go.back    PERF    I.am.afraid   
I'm going uphill somewhere; I'm afraid."

his.house    he.went.back.there   
He went back to his house.

[30] xás    upiip    naa    vúra    máruk    nikrêevish   
then    he.said    1sg.    Intensive    uphill    I.will.live   
And he said, "I'm going to live uphill.

1sg.    here    PERF    all   
I'm all through here.

don't!    must    you.all.kill.them    the.snakes    when.here    you.see.them   
You mustn't kill the snakes when you see them here."
