In the winter, in December (the bad month), the bears all go into dens.

They stay inside all winter.

Then people used to say, "Let’s go look at our dens!"

(The bear) was nowhere to be seen.

So they shouted loudly, ‘Come out!’

(The bear) He didn’t come out anywhere.

[9]	púyava	tuvôonkaa	pa'ávansa
	you.see	he.crawled.in	the.man

So the man crawled in.

[10]	kári	îikam	yítha	úkrii
	then	outdoors	one	he.stays

And one stayed outside.

[11]	yanavéek	utákviihriv
	visible.	he.lies.curled

(The one who crawled in) saw (the bear) curled up.

[12]	púyava	tóo	yfúutrupuk	pavírusar	îim	tuvôonupuk
	you.see	he.has	push.out	the.bear	outdoors	he.came.out

Then he pushed the bear outside, he came out.

[13]	púyava	tóo	pvôonupuk	pa'áraar
	you.see	he.has	come.back.out	the.person

The person came back outside.

[14]	púyava	pa'îim	ikrêen	púyava	tóo	ykar	pavírusar

And the one who stayed outside killed the bear.

They finished killing it, they dragged it out of the den.

They killed it that way in the winter.

So the fat ran together.

Then they dragged it out of the fire.

Then it became small.

And they scraped it when it was cool.

And they cut it up.

And in the winter they ate it.
