The young women went gathering hazel sticks. Then they came home. They carried home the hazel sticks in burden baskets. And lots of young unmarried men peeled the sticks. They would say, "Let's have a contest!"

(Or) the case would be that they were gathering acorns. And the young women would come home. They picked the burden baskets full. So they came home and then (they said), "Let's have a contest!" They cracked them with their mouths (i.e., with their teeth).
