Coyote wanted to make money.

And he said, "I'm leaving for Klamath Lakes, I'm going to make money."

And he went upriver, he was singing.

"I'll leave for Klamath Lakes, I'll go make money."

And he went a long ways upriver.

And he looked upriver.

A tree stood there.

He saw ten raccoons sitting.

And he said, "Well, hurray!

I'll make new pants and my shirt and a quiver and my shoes."

And he ripped off his clothes.

And he tore them into little pieces.

And he threw them downhill.

And he stood naked.

[15] xás kári ta'ítam " chími kankúniihki," hínupa páy tóo kfíripriv.

And then (he said), "Let me shoot (one)," but he missed.

And the raccoon jumped downhlll.

[17] xás kúkuum vúra yíth ukúniihka.

And he shot at another one.

[18] kúkuum vúra uum uskákunih.

It too jumped down.

And he missed them all.

Then he felt bad.

And he crept downhill.

And he picked up his torn-up clothes.

And then he mended them.

He was carrying a lot of thread, that's what he was going to string his money with.

And he traveled upriver.

And he got hungry.

And he saw berries ripe there.

He saw there was a forest fire there.

He saw lots of grasshoppers cooked, and they were sort of good-tasting.

And so he ate them.

[33] xás vúra taay u'av.

And he ate a whole lot.

[34] xás vúra hûutva tu'iin, púxay ta'ítam yâavahitihara.

But what was the matter with him? he wasn't getting full.

And he looked behind him.

[36] yánava páxaath vaa vúra ukupa'íshipithunahiti pookupavúrayvahitiheen.

He saw the grasshoppers strung around where he had been wandering.

[37] xás ta'ítam uturáayvaheen.

So then he looked around.

[38] xás yánava káan axvaha'ípaha u'íihya.

And he saw a pitch tree standing there.

[39] yánava axvahátaay.

He saw there was a lot of pitch.

[40] xás " chími kanipshivshápvaani."

So (he said), "Let me plug myself up."

[41] xás kúkuum u'ípav.

Then he ate again.

[42] xás vúra chéemyaach uyâavaha.

And he quickly got full.

[43] xás axmáy vúra uthítiv ishnur.

And suddenly he heard thundering.

[44] xás upíip " hôoy vúra kumeethívthaaneen usnúrutih."

And he said, "It's thundering somewhere in the country."

[45] xás axmáy vúra " anoo! anoo! tá néemchak."

And suddenly (he said), "Ouch! ouch! I'm burnt!"

(Bright: "anoo! 'ouch!' is used when a person is burned. Other types of pain occasion the response akee!")

[46] xás upitvâavraa.

He looked back over (his shoulder).

[47] yánava " tá ná'iinka."

He saw, (he said), "I'm burning!"

[48] xás âapun ukyívish, xás ukrivrúhuthun.

And he fell to the ground, and he rolled about.

[49] xás úmsip pá'aah.

Then the fire went out.

[50] xás kári upvâaram, xás vúra u'ípahoo.

So then he went off again, and he traveled again.

[51] xás vúra xára u'áhoo.

And he traveled a long time.

[52] xás vúra íshaha tóo xra puxich.

And he got very thirsty.

[53] xás pamúprii vúra puxích tuváxrah.

His tongue was very dry.

[54] xás yánava káan ikmaháchraam u'íikra.

And he saw a sweathouse standing there.

[55] xás yanava káan ára upíkniihvutih, upakurîihvutih.

And he saw a person was sweating himself there, he was singing.

[56] káruma vúra tuthapáxrah.

(Coyote) was terribly thirsty.

[57] xás yánava káan axak'ásip axrát'aas utháthriin.

And he saw two baskets of berry juice sitting there.

[58] xás upíip " yôotva, nâachish mu'íshaha chí ni'ísheesh.

And he said, "Hurray, I'll drink nephew's juice!

[59] chími chîimich vúra kanpakatkâatih."

Let me just taste a little."

[60] xás kúkuum vúra " xâatik vúra kumatêeshich kan'îishi."

And again (he said), "Let me drink a little more."

[61] xás áxak vúra pa'ásip u'íshfip.

And he drank up both bowls.

[62] xás upíip " náachish, xáyfaat ík vúra neexviphûunish."

Then he said, "Nephew, you mustn't get angry at me!"

[63] xás kári u'árihroov.

And he traveled upriver.

[64] xás pamúnaath u'árihrupuk.

Then his "nephew" came outdoors.

[65] xás uxús " chí kan'îishi."

And he thought, "Let me drink!"

[66] xás yánava pa'ásip áruun kuniphíriv.

And he saw the baskets lying empty.

[67] xás upíip " yáxa áta uum papihneefich'îin tá nasítviik.

And he said, "Look, I'll bet Coyote stole it from me.

[68] kínikini vúra uum uvaxrahchákeesh.

Let him die of thirst!

[69] xáyfaat ík vúra íshaha umah.

He mustn't find any water.

[70] koovúra ík pa'íshaha uváxraahvunaavish."

All the water must dry up."

[71] xás pihnêefich u'árihroov.

And Coyote traveled upriver.

[72] xás íshaha tóo xrah.

And he got thirsty.

[73] xás vaa vúra u'áhootih.

But he just kept traveling.

[74] xás vúra puxích tóo xrah, xás " chími íshaha kan'îishi."

Then he got very thirsty, and (he thought) "Let me drink water!"

[75] xás ta'ítam upátumkuriheen.

So he put his mouth down to the water.

[76] xás ámtaap kích úkpuupvar apmaan.

And just dust puffed into his mouth.

[77] xás yánava pa'íshaha sáruk tuvúunfak.

And he saw the water flowing away downhill.

[78] xás u'áharam.

So he chased it.

[79] xás ník tóo kfuukiraa.

And he grabbed at it.

[80] xás ivaxraháriik tóo skákish.

But he landed on dry ground.

[81] xás pa'íshaha tuvúunfak.

And the water flowed away downhill.

[82] xás upíip " vúra xâatik.

And he said, "Let it go.

[83] miník ni'ísheesh kâam."

I'll drink upriver a ways."

[84] xás u'árihroov.

And he traveled upriver.

[85] xás uthítiv páthuuf uvúrunihva.

And he heard a creek flowing down.

[86] xás ukvíripship.

And he broke into a run.

[87] xás upíip " pananívaas nipaathkúriheesh."

And he said, "I'll throw my blanket in the water."

[88] xás múvaas upaathkúrih.

And he threw his blanket in.

[89] xás ámtaap kích ukpúpusip.

But just dust puffed up.

[90] xás vúra chími u'íveesh, kóova tuvaxráhchak.

And he was about to die, he was so thirsty.

[91] xás upíip " payêem nivôoruraavish pa'ípaha.

And he said, "Now I'll climb a tree.

[92] xasík pananívaas nipaathkúriheesh."

Then I'll throw my blanket in the water."

[93] xás kúkuum uthítiv páthuuf.

So he heard a creek again.

[94] xás uchunvákir vúra kacha'îimich.

And he sneaked up slowly.

[95] xás á' uvôoruraa ípahak.

And he climbed up a tree.

[96] xás ta'ítam pamúvaas upaathkúriheen.

And then he threw his blanket in.

[97] xás kúkuum vúra ámtaap kích ukpúpusip pookyívish.

And again just dust puffed up when it fell.

[98] xás vúra uum hûut chími u'îineesh, pamúprii vúra tuváxrah.

What was he to do? His tongue was just dry.

[99] xás yánava " tá ni'úum kahyúras."

Then he saw, (he said), "I've reached Klamath Lakes!"

[100] xás vúra tá pu'áhootihara, vúra tóo kfuuktih.

And he wasn't walking any more, he was creeping by now.

[101] xás kári ikúkak úkfuukar.

And he crept out on a log.

[102] xás u'ísh.

And he drank.

[103] xás pooptáchvaayship xás kúkuum vúra u'ish.

After he raised up, he drank again.

[104] xás vaa kári pupikvaayshípreera, úuth úkyiimkar.

Then he couldn't raise up any more, he fell into the river.

[105] xás usíinvar.

And he drowned.

[106] xás uthívruuhvarak.

So he floated down from upriver.

[107] xás tá íshyaav.

And it was winter by now.

[108] xás too mah, astíip sah'áhup kunikyáavunaatih.

And he saw, they were gathering driftwood on the shore.

[109] xás tóo píip " ahupyâamach kanpárihish.

And he said, "Let me become a pretty stick.

[110] vaa uum kana'êethripaavish."

Then they'll hook me out."

[111] púyava tá kunmah, pa'ahupyâamach tuthívruuhvarak.

Then they saw it, the pretty stick floating down from upriver.

[112] xás tá kunpíip " yáxa pa'ahupyâamach tuthívruuhvarak.

And they said, "Look at the pretty stick floating down!

[113] chími nu'êethripaa."

Let's take it out!"

[114] xás axmáy vúra pa'áhup tóo skaksîip.

And suddenly the stick jumped up.

[115] xás tá kunpíip " eee! naa nipêesh ' pihnêefich.'

And they said, "Ah, I'll bet it's Coyote!

[116] úuth kiikpípaathkan."

Throw it back into the river!"

[117] púyava xás kunpípaathkar.

So they threw it back in.

[118] xás vúra tuthívruuhvarak.

So he floated down from upriver.

[119] xás yurástiim uthivrúhish.

And he floated ashore on the seashore.

[120] xás mâaka uthívruuhripaa.

He floated up on land.

[121] xás úkfuukripaa.

And he crawled ashore.

[122] xás yánava káan ára kun'áraarahitih.

And he saw people were living there.

[123] yánava káan ikmaháchraam u'íikra.

He saw a sweathouse standing there.

[124] xás utfúnukva.

So he looked in.

[125] xás yánava éeruun, vúra impukáchnihich.

And he saw it was vacant, it was a nice warm place.

[126] xás úkfuukfuruk.

So he crawled in.

[127] xás káan yánava pamukunpatúmkir káru pamukun'ikrívkir athkúrit ukyâarahitih.

And he saw there that their pillows and their chairs were made of fat.

[128] xás vúra tóo xúriha.

And he was hungry.

[129] xás ta'ítam u'ávaheen pamukun'ikrívkir káru pamukunpatúmkir.

So he ate their chairs and their pillows.

[130] xás uthafipshîip.

He ate them all up.

[131] xás ahúpmaam kúuk u'uum, xás u'áasish.

And he went behind the woodpile, and he lay down.

[132] xás axmáy pa'ávansas kunpávyiihfuruk.

And suddenly the men came in.

[133] yáas kunpamváratih.

They had just finished eating.

[134] yítha upíip " yahé hôoy pananíkrivkir."

And one said, "Well, where's my chair?

[135] káru yítha upíip " hôoy pananipatúmkir."

and one said, "Where's my pillow?"

[136] xás kuntúraayva.

And they looked around.

[137] xás vúra puyíthaxay káan thaanêera.

And not one was lying there.

[138] xás kunpíip " naa nipêesh ' pihnêefich.'

And they said, "I'll bet it's Coyote.

[139] mít kunípaat ' tóo síinvar kahyúras.'"

They said he drowned at Klamath Lakes."

[140] pihnêefich vúra káan úyruuhriv, púxay vúra kêenatihara.

Coyote lay there, he didn't stir.

[141] xás pa'ávansas kun'arihíshriihvunaa papákurih.

And the men sang songs.

[142] xás kun'arihíshriihva vúra taay.

They sang a whole lot.

[143] kunpíip " chími panamnihpákuri kiik'árihish, káruma káan chími núvyiihsipreevish."

And they said, "Sing an Orleans song, we're going there!"

[144] xás vúra tusáyriihva, xás uváxiprishuk, xás âapun ukrivrúhuthun.

Then (Coyote) was homesick, and he flopped out, and he rolled around on the ground.

[145] xás upíip " ayukîi panámniik, nanithívthaaneen."

And he said, "Hello Orleans, my country!"

(Bright: "ayukîi 'hello!' may be used, as here, to address a distant person or place which is thought of nostalgically.")

[146] xás kunpíip " pihnêefich uum.

And they said, "It's Coyote!

[147] úuth nupípaathkan."

Throw him in the river!"

[148] xás úxrar.

Then he cried.

[149] upíip " pûuhara, xáyfaat úuth kanapípaathkar.

He said, "No, don't throw me in the river.

[150] kiikxúrikeeshap yâamachich.

I'll paint you pretty.

[151] pamikun'axvâa kiikxúrikeeshap yâamachich."

I'll paint your heads pretty."

[152] xás kunpíip " chémi."

And they said, "All right."

[153] xás ukxúrikvunaa.

So he painted them.

(Bright: "The people whom he painted were ducks" (cf. WB_KL-02); "this episode accounts for their brightly colored heads.")

[154] xás tá kunikyáasip pavéevyiihship panámniik.

Then they started to leave for Orleans.

[155] xás pihnêefich upíip " chími kanipthívkee."

And Coyote said, "Let me go along!"

[156] kunpíip " pûuhara."

And they said, "No!"

[157] xás vúra tóo xrar.

Then he cried.

[158] " kanapípasroovi."

"Take me back upriver!"

[159] xás kunpíip " chími man.

Then they said, "All right.

[160] kúna vúra i'asimchákeesh ík, xáyfaat ík itxâarihva.

But you must close your eyes, you mustn't open them.

[161] yúkun pee'itxâarihvahaak ôok ipishkákishriheesh."

If you open your eyes, you will land back here again.

[162] xás ta'ítam kunípviitraaheen.

So then they paddled up from downriver.

[163] xás pihnêefich uum úyruuhriv, u'asímchaaktih.

Coyote lay (there), he kept his eyes closed.

[164] xás vúra tu'ûuri póoyruuhriv, poo'asímchaaktih.

And he got tired lying (there), keeping his eyes closed.

[165] tuyáavha pavá'iipma.

He was in a hurry to get back (home).

[166] " káru hôoy patanúpviitma, kíri nimah.

"And where have we paddled to? I want to see!"

[167] kíri vúra yunâamich ni'itxâarihva."

Let me open my eyes just a little!"

[168] xás vúra yunâamich u'itxâarihva.

So he opened his eyes just a little.

[169] xás yúruk xás upipmahóonkoon.

And he felt (himself) back downriver.

[170] xás kúkuum vúra kunípviitraa.

Then they paddled upriver again.

[171] xás upíip " payêem vúra puna'itxâarihveesh."

And (Coyote) said, "Now I won't open my eyes."

[172] xás vúra kúnish púfaat ipmahóonkoonara.

And he sort of didn't feel anything.

[173] xás axmáy vúra uthítiv, asámyiith úxak.

And suddenly he heard it, the gravel sounded.

[174] xás pápaah kunithyúruripaa.

And they hauled the boat ashore.

[175] xás kunipêer pihnêefich " ôok uum panámniik."

And they told Coyote, "Here's Orleans."

[176] xás kári vúra u'aachíchha, xás ukrivrúhuthun, úuth upiytúykaanva páyuux.

Then he was happy, and he rolled around, and he kicked the dirt out into the river.

[177] púyava kúth uum pootíshraamhiti panámniik.

That's why there is a flat at Orleans.

[178] púyava páy uum pihnêefich ukúphaanik.

This is what Coyote did.
