[1] avansáxiich vúra uum hitíhaan uxráratih.
A little boy was always crying.

[2] xás pamutat'îin kunipêer " îikam kúuk uumi.
And his mother told him, "Go outdoors!

[3] eenishrúpak ixráran."
Go cry on the porch!"

[4] xás îikam úyfuutrupuk.
And she pushed him outdoors.

[5] káan uxráratih.
He was crying there.

[6] pâanpay tóo kxáramha.
Pretty soon it got dark.

[7] vúra vaa kári uxnánatihach.
He was still crying like that a little.

[8] axmáy xás ukôoha pooxráratih.
And suddenly he stopped crying.

[9] xás uxús " húuka áta tu'uum."
And (the mother) thought, "I wonder where he's gone?"

[10] xás uvôonupuk.
And she went outside.

[11] víri kún tá púra fátaak.
There was nothing there.

[12] káan ník úhyiivtih.
She shouted some there.

[13] vúra tá pu'ipmáhara.
She couldn't find (the child).

[14] xás xára vúra upápiv.
And she looked for him for a long time.

[15] yáas uxúti " naa nixúti ' tá kun'ípas.'"
Then she thought, "I think he's been taken."

[16] hínu páy vúra if.
Sure enough, it was true.

[17] kóova uthvuyxâaha, pamúyuup axváha mûuk kuniptáxvah.
She grieved so for him, she sealed up her eyes with pitch.

[18] "vaa uum vúra punaturâayvutiheeshara."
"That way I won't be looking for him."


[19] pâanpay vúra tá kêech pa'avansáxiich.
After a while the boy (living with his kidnappers) got big.

[20] îikam ukunihîichvutih.
He was outside shooting in play.

[21] xás pámita îin kunsíitvat úpeenti " xáyfaat mâam kúuk ikuníhivraa."
And the one who stole him told him, "Don't shoot up over the hill!"


[22] xás pa'avansáxiich uxús " fâat áta kúth pávaa kanéepeentih."
And the boy thought, "I wonder why I was told that?"

[23] xás mâam kúuk ukúniihva yiimúsich vúra.
So he shot a little ways uphillward.

[24] xás upávar pamukuníhar.
And he went to get his arrows.

[25] kâam kunikfúyvuunish.
He was whistled at, a little ways upriver.

[26] uhyárihish.
He stood still.

[27] axmáy xás pa'úuhyan hôoyva u'aramsîiprin.
Suddenly a voice came from somewhere.

[28] kunípeenti " axicha'êechkeepuhich yáxa íkrii."
He was told, "Look, you are a kidnapped child!"


[29] upikvíripunih.
He ran back downhill.

[30] "púya mâam kanéepeentih, axicha'êechkeepuhich níkrii."
"Say, I'm told uphill, I'm a kidnapped child!"


[31] xás kunipêer " hãã.
And he was told (by his kidnappers), "Yes.

[32] yíiv yúruk xás pamítaat úkrii.
And your mother lives far downriver.

[33] peepárihrupahaak yúruk peepitvâavnukahaak imáheesh úmkuufhitih.
When you go back downriver, as you look down over, you will see there is smoke.

[34] vaa káan pamítaat úkrii."
That's where your mother lives."


[35] ta'ítam upvâaramaheen.
So (the boy) went back home.

[36] víri îifuti poopitrûuputi víri kún yúruk úmkuufhitih.
Sure enough, when he looked downriver, there downriver was the smoke.

[37] xás upikvíriprup.
And he ran downriver.

[38] eenishrúpak úskaaktak.
He jumped onto the porch.

[39] xás uknívniv.
And he knocked.

[40] pamútaat iinâak úhyiv " ka'íruu!
Inside his mother shouted, "Stop it!

[41] vaa káan naní'anamahach mufyukúraam."
That's where my little one used to stay."


[42] xás upíip " tá ni'ípak.
And he said, "I've returned."

[43] ayu'âach kanéepeentih, axicha'êechkeepuhich níkrii."
It was because it was told to me, I'm a kidnapped child."


[44] xás u'árihrupuk, vaa kích upíti " húm íta, húm íta, húm íta."
Then she ran outdoors, she said only, "húm íta, húm íta, húm íta." (No meaning.)

[45] xás upíip " chími pananíyuup nupíkyav."
And she said, "Let's fix my eyes!"

[46] itaharahárinay tutaxváhahitih.
They had been sealed up for ten years.

[47] ta'ítam kunpikyâaheen pamúyuup.
So they fixed her eyes.

[48] xás xákaan kunpiin.
And they lived together again.
