The Indians fished for salmon in a certain way. |

píshiip imvír tá kuníkyav.

First they made a fishing platform. |

táaskar kunikyâaratih.
|
It was made of poles. |
[4] |
ishkêeshak kunvêehkurihvuti patáaskar.
|
The poles were stuck into the river. |

xás sákriv vúra tá kunvêehkurihva.
|
And they were stuck in tight. |

xás pamukun'ikríhar uum taskanatunvêechas ukyâarahitih.

And their fish-trap was made of little poles. |

xás vaa káan pa'urípi unhíkahitih.

And the net was tied on there. |

So when they fished, they sat there on top of the fishing platform. |

And they set their net into the water. |

And they tied a long string to the end of the net. |

The net was made long. |

At the far end it was narrow. |

At the top it was wide. |

xás urípihak tá kunihmáravar.

So when they set it into the water, when the salmon came up, then they ran into the net. |

When the salmon got to the end, the string quivered. |

púyava kári pa'áraar pa'urípi upithyúruripaa.
|
Then the Indian pulled the net out of the water. |

yanavéekva pa'áama su'.

He saw the salmon inside |

púyava xás á' tóo thyúruraa.
|
So he pulled it up (out). |
[19] |
xás kári pa'áama áhup mûuk tu'ákoo.
|
And he hit the salmon with a stick (to kill it). |
[20] |
púyava xás mâaka tóo skúruhripaa.
|
Then he carried it ashore. |
[21] |
víriva pa'áama kunkupeeykárahitih.
|
They caught the salmon that way. |

People said they wouldn't catch (anything) if a woman was around there. |

asiktávaan uum pukáan vúrayvutihara peemvírak.
|
A woman didn't go around the fishing platform there. |

káru pu'aamtíhap káru pishpíshih.
|
And (the fishermen) didn't eat honey either. |
